Causes of Thyroid Imbalance in Women

Many women feel tired, gain weight, or notice mood changes that affect daily life. Thyroid imbalances are common in women. You are not alone, and understanding possible causes can help.

Common factors include:

  • Autoimmune conditions, like Hashimoto’s or Graves’ disease
  • Nutrient shortages, such as low iodine, selenium, or iron
  • High stress levels
  • Hormone shifts, like after childbirth or during menopause
  • Inflammation in the thyroid
  • Environmental toxins

At Nanima Women’s Health, we focus on finding root causes with comprehensive testing and personalized natural support using nutrition, botanicals, and lifestyle changes. This can help improve your energy and well-being.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is naturopath covered by my extended health insurance plan?

Yes, most extended health insurance plans in Ontario provide coverage for licensed Naturopathic Doctors (NDs). The amount of coverage depends on your plan.

No, naturopathic services are not covered by OHIP in Ontario. All visits with a licensed Naturopathic Doctor are paid privately or through your extended health insurance plan if you have coverage.

Naturopathic care looks at your whole health, not just one symptom or condition. At Nanima Women’s Health, we take time to understand how your digestion, hormones, energy, mood, sleep, lab results and stress all connect. Your care plan may include nutrition support, botanical support, lifestyle changes, and advanced lab testing when needed. We look at your body, mind, and daily routine together so your plan is personal to your whole health.

Naturopathic care also works alongside the care you receive from your family doctor and other healthcare providers. We respect the medical care you already have and help you explore a more holistic long-term wellness. You’re welcome to reach out or book a no-pressure consult if you’d like to see if this approach feels right for you.

For your first appointment, you don’t need much just a few simple things that help your practitioner understand your health clearly. If you have any recent lab work or imaging results, feel free to bring them along. It’s also helpful to have a list of any medications, supplements, or herbal products you’re currently taking so your practitioner can get a full picture of what’s supporting your body right now.

In Ontario, naturopathic doctors (NDs) are licensed and regulated healthcare professionals.
They complete an undergraduate degree, followed by four years of full-time medical training at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM). After that, they must pass national board exams and are regulated by the College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CONO). It takes an average 9 years to be a licensed Naturopath Doctor.
